It's basically a really hard plastic insert placed at the arch area (in some shoes it can be placed in the rear heel, forefoot, or all throughout the midsole). By placing the TPU plate in the midsole it increases the shoes torsional rigidity by preventing the shoe from twisting. Cars do the same thing by placing subframe bracing & cross member bars to tie in the suspension pieces and frame together, and strut/shock tower braces. What next to discuss? Heel spurs, hammertoe, bunyons? ROFL
